A group of nature-worshipping aliens triumph over the greedy, evil human corporations that want to destroy their planet. The aliens eventually send the humans back to a dying earth to die. How marvelous!
It took 12 years of “planning”, 350 million dollar budget and a whole new camera to come up with by far one of the best movies I have seen in my life.
As a critic, the plot itself is nothing unique. We have all seen movies where a single man takes the side of another species to defeat his own kind and restore peace. Of course, this movie provides no exception to this classic plot.
Then, what makes this movie spectacular ?Simply put by this article; “super-sleek new-tech 3D, and it is breathlessly reported to have taken the medium of cinema to the next level”
Avatar” takes place in 2154 on the planet Pandora, in “a time of great sorrow.” Earth, ecologically, is kaput. The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), is a former Marine who was wounded in combat on Earth and paralyzed from the waist down. He is selected to participate as replacement of his twin brother (who dies) in the Avatar program , which will enable him to walk again.
Jake travels to Pandora, a lush jungle-covered extraterrestrial moon filled with incredible life forms, some beautiful, many terrifying. A mineral known as “unobtainium” lies beneath the sacred lands of the planet’s native people.
Pandora is also home to the Navi, a sentient humanoid race that is physically stronger than humans, although considered primitive. Standing three meters tall, with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Navi live in harmony with their unspoiled world.
As humans encroach deeper into Pandora’s forests in search of valuable minerals- worth 20 million a kilo!, the Navi unleash formidable warrior abilities to defend their threatened existence. Of course, bows and arrows are no match to heavy armor and machine guns or rockets. And Navi are facing a losing battle.
Steps in Jake, who has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this experiment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Navi hybrids known as “Avatars” . The Avatars are living, breathing bodies that are controlled by a human “driver” through a technology that links the driver’s mind to the Avatar body.
On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can walk . He is sent deep into Pandora’s jungles as a scout for the soldiers who will follow, and encounters many of Pandora’s beauties and dangers. These encounters are by far the best part of the movie; the creativity of the plants and animals and the graphical animation is breath-taking.
He also meets a young Navi female, Neytiri, whose beauty is matched only by her ferocity in battle. Over time, Jake integrates himself into Neytiri’s clan, and begins to fall in love with her. As a result, Jake finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Navi, forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world. The movie ends with the humans losing and Jack and his avatar finally united as one forever.
