Your girlfriend’s guy friend

Original post can be found here.

Your girlfriend insists that they’ve been “friends forever” and that it’s “not like that.” But you know exactly what “it’s” like; he wants to f*ck her. Unfortunately, there’s not too much you can do about it without seeming like a jealous jackass. Technically, he’s not doing anything wrong. He hides behind the innocent guise of a platonic relationship while waiting for the perfect opportunity to make his move. And the worst part about all this? Anything you say to your girlfriend will blow up in your face. What could you say? “I’m suspicious of him because he’s showing interest in you, and there’d be no reason to do that without the prospect of sex.” Sounds terrible. You’d be better off just biting your tongue. Let’s face it, he’ll probably never do anything offensive enough to justify your actions.

He’s such an asshole.

Advice I’d Give My 18 Year-Old Self If I Could

Original post can be found here

Imagine if you had a golden opportunity to talk to your eighteen year-old self.

Really picture this younger you. Think back to who you were in high school — what you wore, who you were friends with, who you thought you were, what place you felt you had in the world. The more details you can summon, the better. You are sitting across from this young person at a diner, and they’re all ears. For twenty minutes.

What would you say? What advice would you give? And knowing how this person thinks, how would you say it?

If I only had time to drill him with a few important points, here’s what I’d try to get across to my younger self:

Rethinking Choices

Choose your love. Love your choice.

I have never been in this much demand and I must confess it feels great. A man’s ego can be such a dangerous thing.

Growing up I felt I always settled when it came to relationships. Whether it be romantic or platonic relationships. Why? It’s simple, my education always came first. Remember the post Girls Its “Our” Turn Now: Jocks vs. Nerds”, it is the final lap and suddenly (or as predicted) I have so many supporters.

Now I can see the finish line. There is however a problem. Let me illustrate this with the following diagram.

Dating for Convenience

ImageWhen someone gives you their time, they are giving you a portion of their life that they will never get back.  It’s one of the most precious gifts you can receive.  Don’t waste it

I have not done this in awhile.

Dating for convenience  (‘DoC’ for short) is a prevalent concept in most developed countries, especially Asian countries. By DoC, I mean couples that date because they happen to attend the same school/ university or work at the same workplace.

Most cosmopolitan countries demand absolute obedience towards a specific aspect of their life, whether it be your studies or work. Every day, we spend 75% or even more of our time at school or work. Singapore is a very good example of such a workaholic culture. We do not social with outsiders or meet new people. Who has time for such things. We end up “hanging” out with the usual crowd and eventually we end up dating one of them. Convenience disguised as “nothing like dating your best friend”.
